Walkability adds value and convenience to city living. Whether you want to stroll to class, grab coffee with friends, or enjoy Milwaukee’s growing dining and entertainment scene, certain neighborhoods stand out for their pedestrian-friendly layout. Here are five of the most walkable neighborhoods for renters in Milwaukee.

Lower East Side

Centered around Brady Street and North Avenue, the Lower East Side is one of Milwaukee’s most energetic and eclectic neighborhoods.

Renters can walk to an array of bars, restaurants, coffee shops, and small music venues, while also being close to the lakefront and the Oak Leaf Trail. The nightlife here makes it especially popular with students and young professionals, but the variety of historic apartments and modern flats also attracts long-term residents who enjoy being at the heart of the action.

But walkability is more than just shops, theaters and restaurants. The Lower East Side has Glorioso’s Italian Market on Brady Street, which is a long-standing neighborhood staple for groceries, deli items, and prepared foods. There’s also a Whole Foods Market on North Avenue, which many residents can reach on foot. Smaller corner markets and convenience stores are scattered throughout the neighborhood.

Upper East Side

Just north of the Lower East Side, the Upper East Side is closely tied to the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, giving it a strong college-town energy.

Streets around Downer Avenue and Oakland Avenue are filled with bookstores, cafés, local restaurants, and a historic movie theater, all within easy walking distance of campus. At the same time, the neighborhood borders some of Milwaukee’s most family-friendly residential areas, with tree-lined blocks and quick access to Lake Park and Bradford Beach. The blend of student life and stable family housing creates a unique balance for renters.

The previously mentioned Whole Foods borders both the Lower and Upper East side, so Upper East Side renters can walk to Whole Foods Market. The neighborhood also has Sendik’s on Downer, a locally owned grocery store known for fresh produce and prepared meals, right in the Downer Avenue commercial district.

Both are easily accessible to UW-Milwaukee students and nearby families.

Bay View

Bay View, south of downtown, is known for its creative spirit and tight-knit community. Kinnickinnic Avenue (known locally as “KK”) serves as the neighborhood’s walkable main street, lined with vintage shops, restaurants, breweries, and music venues.

Humboldt Park adds to the draw, hosting the popular summer “Chill on the Hill” concert series, a beer garden, and family-friendly activities throughout the year. Apartments in Bay View give renters an easygoing lifestyle with a distinctly local character, where most daily needs can be met on foot.

Many Bay View residents walk to Outpost Natural Foods on Kinnickinnic Avenue in southern Bay View, a co-op grocery store with organic and local products. There are also smaller specialty shops and corner stores along KK, making it easy for renters to grab groceries without needing to drive.

Historic Third Ward

The Historic Third Ward combines modern apartment living with Milwaukee’s historic warehouse district. Its centerpiece is the Milwaukee Public Market, a year-round food hall and gathering space that attracts locals and visitors alike. But the Public Market isn't just restaurants and shops, as some vendors offer fresh fruit and vegetables, while to-be-cooked meat options are plentiful.

Renters also enjoy the Milwaukee RiverWalk, which runs right through the neighborhood and connects to downtown. With art galleries, boutique shops, theaters, and waterfront dining all within a few blocks, the Third Ward is one of the most walkable and stylish areas in the city.

Walker’s Point

Just across the river from the Third Ward, Walker’s Point has become a dining destination, with a newer grocery store option in Cermak, while retaining its historic character.

National Avenue runs through the neighborhood and is known for its long-standing Mexican restaurants and family-run shops.

On 2nd Street, a newer wave of restaurants, breweries, and cocktail bars has created one of Milwaukee’s most exciting food and nightlife corridors. Renters in Walker’s Point can enjoy both the authenticity of the historic community and the energy of its fast-growing culinary scene which are all within walking distance of loft apartments and converted industrial spaces.
